Find out how our experienced medicine team can help you find the most rewarding Physician jobs

Perhaps you’ve been considering trying your hand at locum work? Or you’re wanting a change of pace in your career? Maybe you’re from the UK and the Australian summer is calling to you?!

We spoke with our Medicine team, Melissa, Androulla, Claudine, and Eamon, (who collectively have more than 40 years recruitment experience and almost as many specifically recruiting in Medicine) to learn more about what you need to know when searching for your next Locum Physician job or when considering a sea change in your Physician career.

In your opinion, what qualities does it take for a doctor to be successful in Medicine?

We’re lucky to work with some of the best and most respected Specialists in the country, and it is inspiring to see how versatile and adaptable our Physicians are. They are the ‘people person’ of the hospital and usually the ones who have longer-term relationships with their patients, so having good communication skills is key.

Given the collaborative nature of the roles, being a good team player and in particular, enjoying mentoring the junior doctors is also very important. Being quick to adapt and able to adjust to a new system, plus settling quickly is also key when taking on locum work so that the transition from one hospital to the next is a smooth experience.

What do you find the most rewarding about working with Physicians?

For us, it’s the people aspect that has made our job so rewarding over the years, and the opportunity to really get to know the physicians we work with. We’ve had the chance to hear remarkable stories, witness heart-warming achievements both on a personal and professional level and build lifelong relationships with our doctors

It’s amazing to hear some of the incredible things our locum physicians have done when working for Wavelength. From volunteers who travelled to remote communities to stop the spread of Eboli to locums who have witnessed native wildlife, journeying along the roads whilst on the way to work. Or to hear about the fantastic achievements of the doctors and their families from weddings to new babies, HSC and University achievements, travelling the world or even building their own boat.

Do you have any advice for Physicians considering work in Australia?

There are plenty of factors to consider when moving to a new country and the process can be quite daunting at first. That’s why we recommend that you partner with experts in medical recruitment to make the process as simple as possible for you.

Top pieces of advice for Physicians when considering work in Australia include:

  1. Consult your family to ensure they’re on board and excited about the new adventure
  2. Research and consider your Visa options
  3. Apply to the appropriate College to have your qualifications recognised in Australia and obtain your medical registration
  4. Find the right agency to help you search and find a job, as well as help you navigate through the interview processes and paperwork
  5. Research the area to learn more about the community before relocating from overseas

Our in-house Regulatory and Migration team and our permanent recruitment consultants can help you navigate through each of these steps. Androulla will be able to support you during the whole process, working with our internal Regulatory and Migration team to complete your registration to work here in Australia and advocating on your behalf to a diverse range of clients all over Australia.

Once you have spoken with Androulla about your plans and preferred career path, we recommend that you undergo the College assessment upfront. While the College assessments do not guarantee you a job, it does show your future employer that you are serious about migrating and starting a career in Australia, setting you apart from other doctors.

What question do you get asked the most by Doctors wanting to work in Australia?

The most common questions are around Regulatory and Migration and the duration of the process. One of the main benefits of doing your job search through Wavelength is that we can take care of the whole process for you, from College and Visa applications to helping you secure a position.

You can also speak with our MARA certified migration agents independently if you’d like to start the College assessment process, or if you have already secured your own job. Email our Regulatory and Migration team at rms@wave.com.au or call +612 8353 9098.

How long does it take?

This depends on how quickly we manage to help you secure a role. Generally, it takes between 3 to 6 months once you have a Job Offer Letter.

Whether you’re looking for your next locum or considering a career change, our Medicine team can help you reach your goals.
