Kowanyama is a very remote community on the Western side of Cape York, about six hours drive
on sealed/unsealed road from Cairns. It is one of the largest communities on the Cape with a 2011
Census population of 1031 (91% Indigenous).
The Kowanyama primary health care clinic prides itself on its delivery of comprehensive care to the
Kowanyama community. As a member of the team, you will be able to embrace the opportunity
for comprehensive and opportunistic health care delivery that each client visit offers. As well as
initial emergency management of acute health issues, there is an an emphasis on preventive health
care, lifestyle intervention, clinical goal setting and encouragement of self-management of health.
These are tasks for every health care provider at the clinic.
Acute care is also occasionally required as Cape York communities are remote and medical
services limited. If considering patient transfer of an ill patient to Cairns, please liaise with RFDS
retrieval MO on call, then Queensland Health nursing staff, get the patient to the acute area of
the clinic and prepare for transfer from the acute section of the Kowanyama clinic e.g.
resuscitation room, rather than direct from a standard consultation room as this is not set up for
acute management e.g. cannulation, fluids, ECG monitoring.

8am to 16.30pm with overnight QH RN on call cover.
