ABOUT
The medical team in DERBY is friendly and supportive. Derby Hospital is a small, well-appointed rural facility serving a population of approximately 4,000. Half of the population are Aboriginal, boasting three different languages.
The town is the main access point to Gibb River Road, Windjana Gorge National Park, Tunnel Creek and the small islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago. It is friendly, with an easy-going outback character and tropical climate.
As a service town Derby offers a good array of amenities. The community of Derby itself is fairly quiet. The accommodation is self-contained and safe – walking distance to the pool. It has a restaurant.
Derby Health Service IS A 35 bed inpatient facility. It has an Accident and Emergency Department, Operating Theatres, Day Surgery, Outpatient Department, GP Rooms, General Medical/Surgical Ward with high dependency beds:
a Children’s Ward, Maternity Ward, with a level 2 Neonatal Nurseries, 3 Delivery Suits and a Family Birth Centre.
Derby is a small maternity unit, with a predominantly Aboriginal patient demographic. Women want to be able to birth on country and we do our best to facilitate this for them and their extended families.
The birth numbers in the unit are low: 90 – 100 per year. High risk antenates are transferred to Broome for “sit down” from 36 weeks.
The cover would be an on call basis only – with no rostered shift as such. The role works closely with the midwifery team, and the Nurse Unit Manager is switched on.
The hospital has around 12 seniors on the roster
Consultant specialists are based in Broome and regularly provide both outpatient and surgical services to Derby Hospital and the community.
The hospital provides a 24-hour Ambulance services, staffed by orderlies and A&E nursing staff. This service extends to outlying communities and at time to Broome, Fitzroy Crossing and up the Gibb
River Road. There is a close collaboration with outside health facilities—the Royal Flying Doctors Services, Derby Aboriginal Health Service, Community Health Services and Numbla Nunga Nursing Home.
Visiting specialist services from Perth include Ear, Nose and Throat, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Dermatology and Rheumatology.
WACHS provides Locum doctors travel to site, air conditioned accommodation and a vehicle.
Travelling to Derby is via Broome, you may overnight before driving to Derby early the next morning, or head off after landing. The drive is an easy 2.5 hours on a straight road.
