LOCATION FORSTER PRIVATE HOSPITAL
HOURS OF WORK Monday – Friday 0800 – 1700 plus shared on call hours
Weekends – 0800 – 1300 and on call
Purpose of Position To support Visiting Medical Officers and Nursing staff in the delivery of quality health care to the inpatients of Forster Private Hospital.
• To assist Specialist Medical Officers in the delivery and care of all patients admitted to Forster Private Hospital.
• To provide surgical assisting as required.
Position Requirements • The position requires qualifications in Medicine recognised by the NSW Medical Board.
• The incumbent is expected to have a high level of skill and experience essential for effective and competent performance.
Qualifications
Eligible for registration with the NSW Medical Board
• Completion of Medical Degree
• Proof of current Medical Registration in New South Wales
• Proof of current Medical Indemnity Insurance
• Successful application for Clinical Privileges at Forster Private Hospital
• Provider/Prescriber number essential
• Willingness to be guided by Specialist Physician providing supervision for the position
• 7 day / roster that includes shared on call after hours.
Clinical Surgical Assistant
Assist visiting surgeons in surgical procedures as required including the specialties of General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, Urology and Ophthalmology.
CMO in Wards/High Dependency Unit (HDU)
Daily ward round with Specialist Physician usually starting at 8 am each day in HDU. Ward round may also include seeing surgical/medical patients under the care of other Specialists. General CMO duties during the course of the shift when not assisting in Operating Theatre include:
• Admission/Assessment of acute medical patients where referred to Physician and/or at General Practitioner request and includes subsequent management of these patients.
• Admission of elective surgical patients where Surgeon is involved or General Practitioner requests and included subsequent management of these patients.
• Management of patients undergoing day procedures e.g.: elective Blood Transfusion, Aredia transfusion, Cardioversion, Chemotherapy etc.
• Minor procedural work
• Ordering, monitoring and following up patient investigations
• Hours are full time and hours of work are dependent on hospital case mix. The CMO visits more acute patients and HDU several times per day and prior to attending to elective Theatre sessions and does general ward duties between cases during the day.
• Covers the CMO responsibilities for patients across medical/surgical/oncology and rehabilitation
• Shared after hours ‘on call’ by mutual agreement.
Research and Teaching
The Career Medical Officer may be requested to provide training and case presentations at Grand Rounds, as a component of the Staff Development Program. The CMO may be requested to assist with Research Projects [Quality Activities] as a part of the ISO 9000 Quality Management Program.
Decision Making The CMO is required to make decisions following Clinical Assessment within their capability boundaries.
Protocols, Clinical Pathways and Guidelines are formalized and readily available for reference.
Clinical Management of patients is discussed at daily ward rounds. Surgical Patients have documented care plans for the CMO to follow, however, they are expected to contact the
Specialist for additional guidance.
Challenges / Problem Solving • Prioritizing Workload – At times the CMO is required as a Surgical Assistant whilst also required in the General Wards for Rounds.
• Oral Presentations at Grand Rounds – The CMO is required to present Case studies at Monthly Grand Rounds. This may provide a challenge to the CMO in terms of confidence in addressing a group
• Team Work – The CMO is expected to work with a multi-disciplinary team including General Practitioners
• Patients’ Demands – Private patients are at times very demanding in their expectations of Doctors and staff
