The hospital serves an approximate population of 350,000 people in the Greater Newcastle Area and also provides services including, Emergency Medicine, ICU, Anaesthetics and General and subspecialty Medicine.   The Emergency Department is fully accredited for advanced training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and offers excellent experience for trainees. The department has 25,000 attendances per annum. There are 3 Consultants in Emergency Medicine, 5 Middle Grades and 6 Junior Medical Officers.   Location   Newcastle is located on the north coast of New South Wales on a small piece of land between the Hunter River and the Pacific Ocean. With a population of 300,000 people, Newcastle, is the second largest city in New South Wales and is within an easy drive of Sydney.   Founded as a penal colony in 1804, coal and steel became the town?s major industries, eventually becoming one of the most substantial producers in the world.
