The hospital is an accredited site for one year general medical advanced training and is 100% cardiology work (not yet accredited core training in cardiology but could be considered as elective training in cardiology). This position is well suited to any medical or cardiology registrar for getting cardiology experience in the Northern Territory. The Hospital As well as the specialist teaching centre for Central Australia, this hospital provides services to the 27,000 residents and the additional 20,000 people who live in remote communities across the region. The hospital has 189 beds and a very busy Emergency Department with 35,000 presentations per year. Alice Springs Hospital is also the rural referral centre for an area roughly the size of New South Wales and because of the relative isolation the hospital is able to handle most medical situations. The closest major referral hospitals are in Darwin and Adelaide ? both of which are approximately 1,500 kilometres away. == The Location == Alice Springs has a population of a little over 27,000 people with approximately 47,000 people living in the immediate region. Indigenous Australian?s make up 6.7% of the population of Alice Springs, compared to 30% in the remaining areas of the Northern Territory, however it is the regional hub of central Australia and many Indigenous clans use the town as a base for essential services.
