Why Locum Work is the Prescription for Junior Doctor Burnout

Discover how locum work can offer junior doctors in Australia a more balanced, fulfilling career path with flexibility, reduced burnout, and better mental health.

It's time to take back your life

For many junior doctors in Australia, the early years of their career can feel like an endless treadmill. Long hours, relentless rosters, and mounting administrative tasks often overshadow the passion that first drew them to medicine. But what if there was another way? A path that offers not just career progression, but also control, balance, and time for you?

At Wavelength International, we understand the pressures faced by junior doctors, and we believe locum work offers a vital prescription for avoiding burnout and fostering a more sustainable career. Let's explore the "before and after" of a junior doctor's schedule.

The 'Before': The Permanent Grind

The traditional permanent role for a junior doctor often comes with demanding realities:

Gruelling Hours: The sheer volume of work is often staggering. An Australian-first study led by the Black Dog Institute and UNSW Sydney, published in BMJ Open, found that junior doctors worked an average of 50.1 hours per week in 2013. More strikingly, over a quarter (25.3%) worked more than 55 hours per week, which was associated with a doubled risk of mental health problems and suicidal ideation.

The AHPRA Medical Training Survey from 2019 further highlighted this, with 76% of doctors in training working over 40 hours per week, and one in eight exceeding 60 hours weekly. The full Medical Training Survey results are available on their website.

Unpaid Overtime: It's not just long hours, but often unpaid ones. A 2024 survey by ASMOF Victoria revealed that a staggering 87% of junior doctors in Victoria reported working unpaid overtime in the preceding 12 months.

Burnout and Distress: These demanding conditions take a heavy toll on mental well-being. The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has reported that as many as 50% of junior doctors in Australia experience high levels of burnout. Furthermore, a Beyond Blue survey indicated that one in three junior doctors reported high levels of psychological distress.

Fatigue and Clinical Error: The consequences of such exhaustion are serious. The AMA Queensland-ASMOFQ Resident Hospital Health Check 2024 found that almost half (46%) of junior doctors surveyed were concerned they might make a clinical error due to fatigue caused by overwork.

Rigid Rosters & Heavy Admin: Beyond the hours, permanent roles often mean fixed schedules, weekend calls, and a significant administrative burden that takes away from direct patient care.

This picture paints a clear challenge for junior doctors striving to maintain their wellbeing while navigating a demanding profession.

The 'After': The Freedom of Locum Life

Now, imagine a different scenario. One where you have the autonomy to shape your career and personal life. This is the promise of locum work:

Customisable Schedule: As a locum doctor, you gain the power to choose when and where you work. This flexibility allows you to craft a roster that genuinely supports your lifestyle, whether that means working intensively for a period or taking extended breaks to recharge. You can decide how many shifts you take, and when, freeing you from rigid hospital rosters.

Reduced Administrative Burden: High-quality locum agencies like Wavelength take on a significant portion of the administrative load, from invoicing to logistics, on your behalf. This means you can focus more on patient care and less on paperwork.

Time For You: Perhaps the most significant benefit, the flexibility of locum work directly contributes to better work-life balance. You can allocate dedicated time for hobbies, family, travel across Australia, or simply rest and recuperation, helping you to avoid the cycle of burnout and prioritise your mental well-being. This renewed energy can also foster greater professional growth, as you gain diverse experiences in various healthcare settings.

Financial Benefits: It's also worth noting that locum roles often come with higher hourly rates compared to permanent salaries, providing the potential for additional income.
