Yulara, in the heart of the Northern Territory, is home to Uluru and one of Wavelength's most sought-after locum placements. One of our locum GPs shares the story of a recent family trip to the region, along with a look at what it's really like to work at the Yulara Health Clinic. Read on for some travel inspiration, and the details if you're considering a locum placement in this region.
Ticking off the bucket list
I was lucky enough to recently experience the trip of a lifetime to Yulara in the Northern Territory. An added bonus was taking my two primary-school-aged children with me and seeing the wonders of the region through their eyes.
Like most visitors, we stayed at Ayers Rock Resort. The resort offers a range of accommodation options, from hotels and apartments to campsites, all connected by excellent shared facilities including restaurants, pools and a town square. The town square is also home to local artists, who display and often create their artwork on site, giving visitors the opportunity to purchase authentic pieces directly from the artists.
One of our favourite afternoon rituals was grabbing some snacks from the local IGA and heading up to the resort's lookout to watch the sunset. Having such an incredible view right on the resort's doorstep felt very special. We also joined a sunrise tour, complete with hot chocolate and tea, which was very welcome given the winter temperature of just three degrees. From there, we travelled to Walpa Gorge. Walpa means “windy” in the local Indigenous language, and it certainly lived up to its name that day.
A real highlight of the trip was cycling the fifteen-kilometre loop around Uluru. The track is relatively flat with firm, compacted sand, making it accessible for most fitness levels. That said, five and seven-year-olds may still require the occasional chocolate bribe to keep going, and perhaps some adults too!
Uluru
What struck us most was how different Uluru looked at every turn. Combined with the winter wildflowers and native vegetation surrounding it, the landscape was constantly changing and incredibly beautiful. It's an experience our family will never forget.

Working in Yulara
Located in the heart of Ayers Rock Resort, the Yulara Health Clinic is a highly sought-after placement for GP locums and is often booked well in advance. Working across both the Yulara Health Clinic and the nearby Imanpa Clinic, you'll provide care to tourists, resort employees and members of the local Aboriginal community.
The team and services at Yulara Health Clinic
You'll work alongside another GP, experienced nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners and a range of visiting allied health professionals, including a dietitian, diabetes educator, podiatrist, optometrist and psychological services team. The clinic uses Communicare software, and an orientation can be provided if required. Services include health assessments, immunisations, chronic disease management, medication reviews and patient education. The variety of presentations, combined with the unique patient mix, makes this a rewarding and diverse role for any GP seeking a memorable locum experience.
Accomodation
Accommodation varies depending on availability and the time of year, but typically ranges from one to three-bedroom furnished properties. All accommodation includes Wi-Fi, a fully equipped kitchen and an outdoor area. You'll also be within easy reach of the local shops, restaurants, gym and resort pools.
Overall, it's a locum experience I highly recommend.
