Dr Ziad Basyouny's journey from Egypt to Sydney

His career, successes and learnings along the way

Dr Ziad Basyouny’s journey to becoming a respected GP, practice owner, and Independent Federal Government candidate in Australia is anything but typical. In a recent episode of the Medical Flyways podcast, Dr Basyouny shares his incredible story with host Dr Srishti Dutta, revealing the twists and turns that led him from Egypt to Australia.

An Unplanned Path into Medicine

Dr Basyouny’s journey into medicine was not by choice, but rather a path paved by his father. Despite initial resistance, he excelled in medical school in Egypt, but became increasingly disillusioned with the corruption he witnessed. This frustration fuelled his desire to seek a better life elsewhere.

From McDonald’s to Medicine

Arriving in Australia, Dr Basyouny faced unexpected challenges. Unable to initially practice medicine, he worked various jobs, including a stint at McDonald’s. However, his determination never wavered. A chance encounter with a recruiter led him to discover a pathway for overseas-trained doctors to practice in Australia. This opportunity required him to pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, a significant hurdle that he overcame with sheer grit and determination.

A Career of Service and Leadership

Dr Basyouny’s career in medicine flourished, leading him to work in various hospitals and clinics across Queensland and New South Wales. He eventually settled in Western Sydney, where he stablished his own practices and became a leader in general practice, advocating for healthcare literacy and equity in his community. His passion for improving the health system led him to take on leadership roles, including helping to establish and run Covid response programs for Western Sydney.

Insights for International Medical Graduates

Dr Basyouny’s story offers valuable lessons for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking to build a life in Australia. He emphasises the importance of strong English language skills, perseverance, and adaptability. His advice to IMGs is:

"If you’re thinking of Australia, don't worry about medicine - you will learn it. You’ll understand it. If there is something that you need to do, it’s language - English. And you need to learn (to use) it in a social setting. Language gives you an understanding of culture and how people think."

A Story of Resilience and Triumph

Dr Basyouny’s story is one of resilience, determination, and ultimately, triumph. His journey from a disgruntled medical graduate in Egypt to a respected leader in Australian healthcare and aspiring Federal politician is an inspiration to overseas-trained doctors around the world. His story highlights the opportunities that await those who are willing to work hard, embrace challenges, and never give up on their dreams.
