Beyond the phone call: Inside a Wavelength site visit to Katherine, NT

When one of our doctors took on a locum placement in the Emergency Department at Katherine Hospital, deep in the Northern Territory's Top End, one of our senior Wavelength consultants, Skye Rogers, did what we do best: showed up in person, coffee in hand, to see how they were settling in.

More Than a Check-In Call

At Wavelength, we know a locum placement is more than a roster gap filled. So when the opportunity came up to visit Katherine, Skye packed a bag and flew north. The goal was simple: sit down with our doctor, meet the team they were working alongside, and see the placement through their eyes.

Landing in Katherine: A Coffee Run With a Difference

First stop after landing was not the hotel, it was the hospital. Skye walked into the Emergency Department carrying trays of coffee for the whole team on shift, a small gesture that said a big thing: we see you, and we appreciate you.

It is a simple habit, but one that matters. Locum doctors in regional and remote Australia often work long, unpredictable shifts a long way from their usual support network. Your Northern Territory Bucket List

With the hospital visit done, there was time to explore, and the Top End did not disappoint. If you are weighing up a locum placement in the NT, here is what our consultant discovered along the way.

Fuel up in Coolalinga

Heading north out of Darwin, Mamma's Kitchen in Coolalinga is the perfect pit stop. Grab a coffee, pick up some car snacks and, if you know you will not make it to the shops before your first shift, grab a frozen home-cooked meal to keep in the freezer. Future you will be grateful.

Sort your permit first

Before you head off exploring, check whether you need a permit for where you are going. Parts of the Northern Territory sit on Aboriginal land and require a permit to enter, so sort this out ahead of time and save yourself a wasted trip.

Float through Bitter Springs

About an hour from Katherine, Bitter Springs is pure magic. Grab a pool noodle and let the current carry you gently downstream through crystal clear water. Keep your eyes open, you might even spot a turtle.

Soak at Mataranka Thermal Pools

Ten minutes from Bitter Springs, the Mataranka thermal pools have a different energy, busier and more social. Grab a drink and a bite at the Mataranka Homestead, where you will often find live music and, importantly, proper facilities on hand.

Shower under Edith Falls

Around 45 minutes north, Edith Falls is worth the effort. It takes a rocky one kilometre walk to reach (keep an eye out for snakes), but standing under a natural waterfall shower at the end makes every step worthwhile.

No trip to Katherine is complete without a cruise through Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Skye took the two-gorge dinner cruise with a guide, watched the sun go down over the sandstone walls and ticked off a very Territory milestone: a crocodile sighting. A full day kayak trip was on the cards too, until a resident saltwater crocodile put a stop to those plans, a timely reminder that this is wild, working country, and part of what makes it so special.
