Under the Migration Amendment (2026 Measures No. 1) Act 2026, the Government can now pause travel to Australia for up to six months for certain visa holders who are outside Australia, even if their visa is valid.
Are there any travel restrictions in place?
No, there are currently no restrictions in place.- No countries are affected - No visa cohorts are impacted - Travel to Australia continues as normal However, this could change quickly if a determination is introduced.
What does this mean for visa holders?
This is a key shift in how Australia manages entry. A visa may remain valid, but travel could still be restricted.Higher risk groups:- Visa holders offshore - Candidates approved but not yet travelled - Individuals planning to leave and re-enter Australia Lower risk:- Visa holders already in Australia and not travelling
What should you do now?
Offshore visa holders Consider whether travel plans should be brought forward, where possible.
Onshore visa holders Think carefully before travelling, as re-entry may be impacted if settings change.
