The Medical Flyways podcast, a Wavelength production, often features the inspiring stories of migrant doctors who have made Australia their home. In a compelling new episode, host Dr Srishti Dutta welcomes Dr Ushma Narsai, a GP in New South Wales with a wealth of experience from both South Africa and Australia. Dr. Narsai is a ‘portfolio GP,’ boasting a diverse career that includes roles as a medical advisor, claims manager, clinical editor, and clinical research investigator.
Dr Narsai's journey to Australia was driven by a need for change, primarily due to rising crime in South Africa. She highlights the crucial support she received from the AMC and AHPRA in navigating the complex registration process. While the emotional toll of leaving family and everything familiar behind was significant, Dr Narsai shares how acceptance and the abundance of opportunities in Australia have shaped her experience.
A key takeaway from her discussion is the importance of support, persistence, and an open mind when embarking on such a life-altering move. Dr Narsai's willingness to take on roles outside her initial expectations, even starting in a call centre while awaiting registration, proved instrumental in opening new doors and gaining diverse experience.
"Dreams are meant to come true. And, you know, what's the worst thing that will happen? You'll come, you don't like it, you go back home. So what?"
For Dr Narsai, moving to Australia fostered a newfound confidence and the realisation of her transferable skills as a doctor. She emphasises that in Australia, individuals are often seen for who they are, rather than solely by their profession, which provided her with the freedom to explore various avenues beyond traditional general practice.
Her current ‘portfolio’ career, spanning roles with Wavelength Partner company Avant, as an investigator, and in Health Pathways, demonstrates the breadth of opportunities available to doctors in Australia. She credits her success to strong medical knowledge and, crucially, excellent communication skills – a refinement of what she learned in medical school and developed throughout her career.
Juggling multiple roles is undoubtedly challenging, but Dr Narsai manages it by mentally ‘switching’ between tasks and finding genuine enjoyment in each of her positions. She stresses the importance of self-care and maintaining balance, whether it's through family connections or regular exercise.
Dr Narsai's parting wisdom for aspiring migrant doctors is to do your research, talk to those already living in Australia, and most importantly, have confidence in yourself. She encourages listeners to embrace opportunities, be open to change, and avoid self-imposed limitations.
"So be open to opportunities, be open to change and don't set limitations for yourself. Don't put yourself in a box."
