Women's Health Week with Medical Flyways

This Women’s Health Week, discover the inspiring journey of Dr Talat Uppal, an obstetrician and gynaecologist who migrated to Australia, rising to the challenges of embracing a new culture and never wavering on her commitment to women’s health.

In season 1 episode 2 of Medical Flyways, Dr Srishti Dutta heard Dr Talat’s story, from her original inspiration for working in women’s health, to her journey to Australia - eventually setting up her own practice. Dr Talat's journey began in Africa, where she completed her foundational medical degree (MBBS) and a year of internship. Her passion for obstetrics and gynaecology was sparked during her training in a base hospital in Nigeria, where she witnessed a wide range of conditions and the suffering of female patients. She attributes her strong sense of purpose and a commitment to women's health to these early clinical experiences.

Dr Talat has a passion for educating GPs on gynaecology, as a way to improve women’s health outcomes. “If you really break down women's health, the actual heavy lifting of gynaecological of women's health concerns is done at the core phase with GPs. And how can we improve and optimise and work together as colleagues to be able to achieve the best for the community.”

From her private practice in Sydney, Dr Talat takes a collaborative approach - incorporating GP and primary care, and carrying out specialised research into abnormal bleeding. She is a strong advocate for mentoring, where she provides opportunities for training and professional development for IMGs and medical students.
