Faster Pathway for Psychiatrists and Anaesthetists to Practice in Australia

Starting 23 December 2024, Psychiatrists and Anaesthetists with internationally recognised qualifications can fast-track their registration to practice in Australia—no need for individual assessments by specialist colleges! 

Psychiatrist

Starting 23 December 2024, qualified psychiatrists and anaesthetists from similar health systems can apply for a faster registration process to practice in Australia, by bypassing individual assessments by specialist colleges.

To access this streamlined process, specialists must hold qualifications from an approved list, including:

Anaesthesia:

Ireland:

Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland (CAI) and Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST) since July 2012.
United Kingdom: Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) since August 2007.

Psychiatry:

United Kingdom: Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) and Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) since August 2007.

What’s required?

  • Meet the same registration standards as other doctors (English proficiency, criminal history check, recency of practice)
  • Undergo 6 months of supervision by an Australian-registered specialist
  • Complete mandatory orientation and cultural safety training
