Once the new facility is completed (expected 2018), the entire service will move to the purpose-built Rehabilitation and Geriatric facility. The combined subacute services will be expanded to two 24 bed wards.
This tertiary, Level 3 RACP teaching hospital holds over 370 beds and serves as the primary hospital for an estimated current population of 140,000. The hospital also serves as the referral hospital for rural and remote communities for the surrounding areas expanding the services area to 614,000 square kilometres – approximately twice the size of Victoria. Currently the Rehabilitation service has an 18 bed general rehabilitation ward dealing with a wide case mix of adult rehabilitation. This ranges from stroke/neurological, amputee, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopaedic & multiple trauma. There is extensive exposure to the Indigenous culture & opportunities for Outreach clinics. Outpatient clinics cover prosthetics/orthotics, chronic pain & brain injury. The multidisciplinary rehabilitation service is based within the hospital campus. The hospital has a wide range of specialist services in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Coronary Care, acute medical and surgical, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Mental Health.
The hospital prides itself on looking after their staff. It offers staff accommodation on campus, from single air-conditioned units to four-bedroom houses. In addition, there are many sporting facilities you can use to keep fit and healthy including an air-conditioned gymnasium and squash courts, outdoor tennis courts and a sparkling 25-metre pool under shade cloth. There is also a comprehensive health library you can access with 10,000 books and 500 journal titles available. Medical databases are networked throughout the Campus and there are Medline searching, reference and inter-library loans services as well.
You will be living in a vibrant harbour city renowned for its tropical climate and enviable laid-back, outdoor lifestyle.
