Emergency Medicine Consultant

Join a large, progressive country hospital and play a key role within the department

  • Assist in retrievals of critically ill patients
  • Ability to make decisions at clinical and individual level
  • Thriving city based near unusual volcanic surrounds
The Position
As an experienced Emergency Medicine Consultant, you will have the opportunity to play an influential role in the development of this department. Working with a high level of autonomy, you will assist with future planning, continuous quality improvement, patient-centred medical care and the delivery of education sessions for all levels of clinical staff. Working alongside both medical and nursing colleagues, you will develop contemporary care processes such as fast-tracking of patients and nurse-initiated strategies, implementing positive changes throughout the department and wider hospital community.

The Hospital
This hospital is the major regional health provider for its region and is one of the most attractive in rural South Australia. It comprises approximately 80 public beds and is co-located with a 20 bed private hospital. It provides extensive services including general medicine, general, orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmic, and gynaecological surgery and obstetrics in addition to an emergency department and a high dependency unit.

In December 2014 work completed on a $27 million redevelopment of the hospital which significantly increased the size of the emergency department and created specialised mental health and rehabilitation facilities.

The Location
This thriving city is located mid-way between Adelaide and Melbourne, just within the border of South Australia. The streets and houses are built around the slopes of an extinct volcano 27 km from the sea, with the city climbing almost to the lip of the famous Blue Lake, and the outskirts extending on to the rich volcanic soil of the surrounding plain.

The city itself boasts beautiful parks and gardens, caves and sinkholes. There is an interesting mix of galleries, museums and local markets with plenty of cafes and restaurants to cater for everyone’s tastes. The city has affordable housing and a high-quality selection of primary and secondary government and non-government schools.

Essential Criteria
To be successful in this role, you will have substantial experience in resuscitation and airways management as well as previous experience in a regional setting. You must hold FACEM or equivalent and be eligible for Specialist registration with AHPRA.
