The opportunity 
The Divisional and Medical Director, Critical Care (DMDCC) will provide contemporary clinical leadership and management to a highly collaborative and well-resourced multi-disciplinary team of health professionals based at the Lady Cilento Hospital, the flagship facility of Children’s Health Queensland (CHQ), a recognised leader in paediatric healthcare, education, and research. 

The division’s range of paediatric subspecialties includes critical care, emergency medicine, intensive care, anaesthetics, cardiac surgery, cardiology, and medical imaging (radiology). Each subspecialty has established clinical leaders reporting to the DMDCC. The division is also co-led and supported by an Operations Manager and a Nurse Director with ultimate accountability resting with the DMDCC.

The DMDCC will report to the Executive Director, Hospital Services and is professionally accountable to the Executive Director of Medical Services. You will be directly accountable for the divisional workforce comprising of 192 FTE medical (80 FTE consultants and 112 FTE junior medical staff), 375 FTE nursing, 67 FTE health practitioners and 78 FTE admin and operational.

You will be responsible for the annual operating budget and be accountable for performance against a negotiated annual service agreement with agreed activity, budget, and quality measures. Clinical governance, leading service development, implementing contemporary practices and quality improvement initiatives will be key responsibilities of this role, alongside providing strategic and operational direction aligned with the CHQ strategic priorities. 

The structure of the position is negotiable with a minimum 0.5 FTE dedicated to divisional leadership and an additional clinical component available up to 0.5 FTE. 

The health service
Children’s Health Queensland (CHQ) is a specialist hospital and health service dedicated to caring for children and young people from across Queensland and northern New South Wales. A team of almost 4000 people deliver a full range of clinical services, tertiary-level care and health promotion programs through the state-of-the-art Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in South Brisbane, the Child and Youth Community Health Service, and the Child and Youth Mental Health Service.

CHQ is a recognised leader in paediatric healthcare, education, and research. Services are provided from key locations in the Brisbane metropolitan area along with state-wide programs, including specialist outreach and telehealth services. CHQ work with 15 other hospital and health services as well as NGOs and charity partners in Queensland to deliver an integrated network of healthcare services and support across the state.

You will demonstrate an outstanding clinical record in a discipline relevant to the division and be highly respected as an opinion leader amongst your professional peers. You will have proven professional leadership skills in a tertiary paediatric setting. You will demonstrate high-level organisational and communication skills and be adept at building new, and developing existing, relationships with clients and key stakeholders with a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the best possible service is delivered.

You will have knowledge of contemporary human resources management issues across a broad spectrum and demonstrated ability to provide strategic direction, lead innovation, and redesign clinical services. You will bring your existing skills and knowledge to this influential divisional clinical leadership position.
