Under the supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide assessment and management of clients requiring specialist psychiatric care and provide management advice to agencies referring clients who are affected by psychiatric symptomatology. You will be working with client’s resident in the Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) and the community as required.
This service is part of the largest country health system in Australia and one of the biggest in the world, providing health services to approximately half a million people, including 45,000 Aboriginal people over a vast two and a half million square kilometre area. The organisation comprises of seven regions with a strong network of public hospitals, health services and centres across rural and remote Western Australia. The Mental Health service employs over 130 multi-disciplinary staff and the team is led by a Clinical Director who is supported by a range of Psychiatrists as well as Medical Officers.
The APU itself is a nice unit to work where the same bed pressures of other units in not felt which makes the position a lot calmer than other acute roles. Further, this service is about to open a step-up step-down facility which will take some patients that would otherwise go to the APU, and help to facilitate discharge. In the APU you will see low levels of aversion, good therapy programs, arts and crafts, horticulture, yoga and walks, social workers and occupational therapists, creating a focus on rehabilitation with a social atmosphere and not just medication.
