The Position

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will be accountable for the clinical management of patients including families and carers, as a member of the multidisciplinary team. You will provide clinical services primarily to the Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU), seeing adults aged 18 to 65, occasionally older if there are not other complicated medical conditions. You will also provide clinical services to the wider region as required in agreement with the Clinical Director and Regional Mental Health Manager. Common cases are very typical of an acute ward, including acute psychosis, drug induced psychosis, schizophrenic induced psychosis, manic psychosis, emotional unstable personality disorders in crisis situations, anxiety disorders, generalised anxiety, PTSD and alcohol dependence.

You will provide your guidance and supervise the work of junior medical staff. In turn you will receive a generous salary and enjoy an amazing range of benefits which may include salary packaging arrangements, Professional Development Opportunities, study leave/assistance, flexible working arrangements, flexible leave arrangements, and other professional and location based allowances.

The Hospital

This service is part of the largest country health system in Australia and one of the biggest in the world, providing health services to approximately half a million people, including 45,000 Aboriginal people over a vast two and a half million square kilometre area. The organisation comprises of seven regions with a strong network of public hospitals, health services and centres across rural and remote Western Australia. The Mental Health service employs over 130 multi-disciplinary staff and the team is led by a Clinical Director who is supported by a range of Psychiatrists as well as Medical Officers. A second RMO has just joined the team, able to do blood tests and other medical testing to ease the burden on Registrars. You will be well supported in your role with 8am to 8pm cover. In total, there are 7 Consultants, so you will be required to work 1:7 on-call. If someone is on leave (2+ weeks) this service will always cover with locum so there will not be an expectation to cross cover and swap on-call duties.

The APU itself is a nice unit to work in with lots of beds, so you will not experience the bed pressures like other units which makes the position a lot calmer than other acute roles. Further, this service is about to open a step up step down facility which will take some patients that would otherwise go to the APU, and help to facilitate discharge. In the APU you will see low levels of aversion, good therapy programs, arts and crafts, horticulture, yoga and walks, social workers and occupational therapists, creating a focus on rehabilitation with a social atmosphere and not just medication.

The Location

You will be living in one of Western Australia's largest towns. Located 2 hours' drive south of Perth, this major business centre offers all the benefits of city-living, commercial opportunities, facilities, education and attractions mixed into a lush seaside setting with a country pace. Many of the attractions are nature-based, due to the temperate climate and picturesque sandy beaches. Here you can spend your spare time fishing, swimming, surfing, windsurfing or snorkelling in the beautiful clear blue water, or take a trip to see wild dolphins in their natural habitat and witness one of nature's most beautiful creatures. If you prefer to stay on dry land then just a short half an hour drive takes you to Western Australia's premiere wine region, where you can go to relax in the wineries and experience some of the famous, local produce.
