Consultant Psychiatrist (VMO) - Melbourne North
Melbourne's North , VIC, }
Job ID.
The Position
This is an opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a private mental health hospital that has quickly developed a strong reputation for high-quality inpatient care.
With patient demand consistently exceeding capacity, the service is seeking additional psychiatrists to support ongoing growth and help meet increasing referral volumes. The hospital has particular interest in psychiatrists with experience in addiction psychiatry, complex personality disorders, and broader adult mental health presentations.
A minimum commitment of two days per week is preferred to support continuity of care, although there is flexibility in how your practice is structured. Psychiatrists have the autonomy to manage their own workload while benefiting from a highly supportive environment and responsive leadership team.
This contractor arrangement allows psychiatrists to retain 100% of their billings, while the hospital provides consulting suites, billing support (if desired), referral management, and operational assistance, allowing clinicians to focus on patient care rather than administration.
The Hospital
This privately owned mental health hospital offers a genuine alternative to larger corporate providers, with a strong emphasis on clinician autonomy, collaboration, and responsive decision-making.
Supported by a multidisciplinary team of psychologists, social workers, counsellors, addiction specialists, nurse practitioners and medical practitioners, the service provides comprehensive inpatient and day program treatment for a wide range of mental health conditions.
The service offers comprehensive inpatient and day program care across a broad spectrum of mental health presentations, including addiction and older persons mental health. Advanced treatment options such as ECT, TMS and ketamine therapies are available onsite through established specialist programs, providing admitting psychiatrists with access to a wide range of evidence-based treatment pathways within a single, integrated service.
Dedicated specialists currently deliver ECT, TMS and ketamine services, creating a seamless internal referral pathway for admitting psychiatrists. A major tertiary hospital and emergency department are located nearby, providing rapid access to medical support when required.
The Location
Located in Melbourne's northern growth corridor, this area offers excellent access to the CBD while maintaining a strong community focus. The region continues to experience significant population growth, creating sustained demand for mental health services and supporting long-term practice growth. Residents enjoy easy access to shopping precincts, schools, public transport and major road networks, while remaining within comfortable reach of Melbourne's renowned dining, cultural and sporting offerings. For psychiatrists seeking the benefits of metropolitan practice without the congestion of inner-city healthcare settings, this location offers an attractive balance of opportunity and lifestyle.
Essential Criteria
Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP)
Specialist Registration with AHPRA
Experience managing complex adult mental health presentations
Interest or experience in addiction psychiatry and/or personality disorders highly regarded
Commitment to collaborative, multidisciplinary care
