We'd like to introduce you to a new member of the Wavelength GP team working behind the scenes to connect you with the right opportunities. Meet Craig Hickey, Senior Consultant focusing on AMS and GP clinic locum recruitment. Read on to find out what led him to healthcare recruitment, and what he gets up to when he's off the clock.

What's your role in the company, and what will you be focusing on with the GP team?

I joined Wavelength as a Senior Consultant on the General Practice team. I'll be focusing on AMS and GP clinic locum recruitment.

What drew you to medical recruitment?

Like most recruiters, I more or less fell into recruitment. I worked in tech for a couple of years, but healthcare was the sector that really stuck with me. There's something about it that feels genuinely meaningful.

What keeps me going day to day is knowing that every placement isn't just a tick-the-box exercise. It's a healthcare worker in the right place at the right time, and on the other end, a patient receiving the care they need because that gap has been filled. Playing even a small part in ensuring frontline healthcare professionals have what they need is genuinely rewarding.

What part of Australia do you recommend people visit, or what part would you like to visit and why?

If I had to pick a part of Australia that's close to my heart, it would be rural NSW and Victoria. Coming from Ireland, there's something about the rolling green hills and quiet country landscapes that feels familiar, like a little piece of home on the other side of the world.

But it's not just the scenery, it's the people. There's a warmth and friendliness in these communities that reminds me so much of Ireland. That combination of landscapes that feel like home, and people who make you feel like you already belong, is exactly why that part of the country means so much to me.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I've got what you'd call hobby ADD. I go all in on something for a couple of months, fully committed, and then move on with absolutely no explanation. No closure, no goodbye, the hobby just quietly gets dropped.

Last year it was hiking. My wife and I completed some great trips around NSW and WA. This year, with winter keeping us indoors, we've swapped hiking boots for baking. I could talk your ear off about sourdough starters these days.

As for what's next, who knows. Maybe something with an engine, maybe something with a fishing rod. Watch this space!
