The company you keep. Why it matters which recruitment agency you choose

I can’t deny it. I’m tickled pink to find out that Wavelength International has been listed amongst the BRW top 50 “Great Place to Work” list for the fourth consecutive year.

We are particularly pleased because this is now the only award we apply for. There are many accolades to collect these days and some businesses seem to do so like they are collecting mirrors for their wall in which to admire themselves.

However, the BRW Great Place to Work list is different. How so? Well for starters it is not limited to the recruitment industry, or small business or the private sector, so you are benchmarking yourself against the best of the best in the country.

Secondly, selection is based in large part on a score determined by an anonymous employee survey carried out by GPTW under strict conditions. This assesses employees views on things like management capability and style, fairness in the workplace, team work, respect for colleagues etc. As a by-product the results are fed back to management so our application also acts as a barometer of the general morale within our company - a useful management tool in its own right.

So why should this matter to you when choosing an agency to work with?

Well here is what Great Place to Work have to say about companies that they award:

What is a Great Workplace? The Employee View

From the Employee’s perspective, a great workplace is one where they:

  • TRUST the people they work for;
  • Have PRIDE in what they do; and
  • ENJOY the people they work with.

What is a Great Workplace? The Manager View

From the Manager’s perspective, a great workplace is one where they:

  • ACHIEVE ORGANISATIONAL OBJECTIVES;
  • With employees who GIVE THEIR PERSONAL BEST; and
  • WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM  in an environment of TRUST

When you engage a recruiter you are asking them to represent you in the marketplace. You expect them to be effective at what they do for you, confidential with your information and ethical in how they act on your behalf.

Recruiters that are trusting, proud and happy at work are far more likely to display these characteristics than those that are not.

Similarly, companies where management are focused, committed and team-oriented are much more likely to set high standards of work and ethics for their employees to follow than those that are otherwise.

As in any walk of life you will be judged by the company you keep so be sure to choose wisely when faced with a myriad of agencies to choose from.
