Skills in Demand Visa to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa on 7 December 2024

On 3 December 2024, the Australian Government announced that the new Skills in Demand visa (SID) would be implemented and replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa on 7 December 2024, and released the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).

The Skills in Demand (SID) visa will retain subclass 482 as with the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa.

The new Skills in Demand visa (SID) is a three-tiered system for applicants based on their annual earnings and occupation. The three streams are:

Specialist Skills stream: For occupations with guaranteed annual earnings of at least $135,000 which will be indexed annually.

Core Skills stream: For occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). Requires guaranteed annual earnings of at least $73,150 which will be indexed annually.

Essential Skills stream: For occupations earning under $73,150 per year but working in essential skills occupations.

The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) will apply to the Core Skills stream of the new Skills in Demand visa. The CSOL will also apply to the Direct Entry stream of the permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa.

The CSOL fulfils the Government’s commitment to replacing complex, out-of-date, and inflexible occupation lists in our temporary skilled visa program. It is a single consolidated list, informed by labour market analysis and stakeholder consultations by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA), that provides access to temporary skilled migration for 456 occupations.

Although Resident Medical Officer, General Practitioner and Specialist occupations are included in the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), most medical practitioners are expected to fall under the Specialist stream of the Skills in Demand visa (subject to annual earnings of at least $135,000 which will be indexed annually), for which no occupation list apply. Priority processing will apply to Specialist stream applications with a commitment to a 7-day median visa processing time.

We will soon announce more details on other reforms taking place on 7 December 2024, including the Skills in Demand visa and National Innovation visa.

We will provide further information on the Skills in Demand and National Innovation visa criteria and application charges once they become available.
