What Is the Comparable Health System (CHS) Pathway?

The CHS pathway allows GPs from specific countries to apply for provisional general registration without sitting additional exams. This is based on the premise that their medical training and clinical experience align closely with New Zealand standards.

Eligible countries include:

Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, the USA, South Africa, the Netherlands, and several others. A full list is available on the MCNZ website.

Are You Eligible?

You may qualify if you:

• Have an acceptable primary medical qualification
• Have practised clinically for at least 33 months in the past 48 months (minimum 20 hours/week) in a comparable health system
• Hold full or general registration in at least one of those countries
• Will be working in a role similar to your previous experience
• Meet MCNZ’s fitness for registration requirements

Alternatively, if you’ve recently completed formal postgraduate GP training in a comparable country, you may also qualify under a slightly different CHS sub-pathway.

What’s the Process?

1. Secure a job offer in New Zealand in general practice.
2. Apply for provisional general registration through MCNZ.

5. Begin work under supervision, and later transition to full general registration.
