Here at Wavelength, we're all about helping doctors find their perfect fit, whether that's a permanent role or the thrilling freedom of locum life. And when it comes to embracing the locum adventure with gusto, Dr Judy Ridd is in a league of her own!

Since joining us as a GP locum in 2023, Dr Judy has hopped, skipped, and jumped her way through nearly 20 placements across Australia. From the pristine shores of Norfolk Island to the dusty red heart of Alice Springs, and from the majestic Grampians to the remote, stunning islands off the coast of Arnhem Land, she's not just been delivering top-notch clinical care – she's been collecting a treasure trove of incredible stories and jaw-dropping travel photos, keeping our team utterly entertained along the way.

We managed to catch up with Dr Judy amidst her whirlwind travels to get a little peek into the life of a locum GP and gather some of her brilliant insights. So, grab a cuppa and get ready for some serious wanderlust!

Any tips for new remote GPs?

"Take a deep breath and just do it!" Dr Judy advises with a chuckle. "Seriously, it can feel like a big leap, but it's so rewarding. My main tip is to bring your essentials – things that make you feel at home. For me, that's my favourite tea or coffee, and plenty of books or crafts. You'll find you have lots of time to yourself, which can feel like a real break, but sometimes it can feel a bit lonely. So having those comforts is key. And remember, anything you don’t know, you can always look up or ask about – there's always support available."

What is a must-see location?

With so many incredible destinations under her belt, we were keen to know which one truly stole her heart. She doesn't hesitate with her answer. "Carnarvon," Dr Judy asserts. "And make absolutely sure you head up to Ningaloo Reef. It’s a must."

Podcast recommendation for life on the road?

Long drives and quiet evenings often call for a good podcast, and Dr Judy has her listening habits down pat. "For a good laugh and to stay on top of things, I love Private Eye – classic British humour and politics, can't beat it! For something Australian, The Morning Edition is great. And for medical insights, The BMA podcast Deep Breath In covers really topical medical issues. I also trawl for comedy podcasts, they're brilliant for unwinding after a long day!"

Best audiobook for after work?

"Definitely The Surgeon’s Daughter," Dr Judy recommends without hesitation. "It's a fantastic historical fiction about a female doctor performing the first Caesarean section and all the controversy surrounding it."

Dr Judy's adventures are a brilliant reminder of the incredible opportunities that locum work can offer. Not only does it provide diverse clinical experiences, but it also allows for an unparalleled exploration of Australia's stunning landscapes and vibrant communities, all while enjoying some time out for yourself.
