== The Position == In this role you will be primarily responsible for the provision of high-quality inpatient, outpatient and outreach general medicine and infectious diseases services. You will join 1 other Infectious Diseases Physician and a wider team of collegiate physicians with a range of sub-specialties.  You will initiate and partake in quality management activities, performance appraisal, continuing education programs, and undertake research as appropriate. You will also be involved in the supervision and teaching of junior medical staff, including advanced trainees and medical students. Here you have the opportunity to gain extensive experience in indigenous healthcare, with over 75% of inpatients from indigenous communities. Provision of outreach services to the indigenous communities is also an integral part of the clinical work in the division of medicine. The hospital provides services to some of the nation?s most socially disadvantaged people, with high levels of morbidity and mortality, many with diseases not seen elsewhere in the country.  The Hospital This 183-bed hospital is the specialist referral centre for Central Australia providing services across an area of 1 million square kilometres, equivalent to the size of NSW. The hospital provides general speciality services in most areas including day procedure, emergency, intensive care and high dependency, maternity, medical, outpatients, paediatric, surgical and mental health services. The nearest referral hospitals are some 1,500 kilometres distant. Because of the relative isolation the hospital services must be able to handle most medical situations.  The hospital has strong links to Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre as tertiary referral centres and through visiting specialists from these hospitals. It is affiliated with Flinders University with an on-site medical school and linked closely with Baker Institute of Diabetes and Menzies School of Health Research. == The Location == You will be based in the second largest town in the Northern Territory of Australia. Averaging 576 metres above sea level, the town is nearly equidistant from Adelaide and Darwin, close to the geographic centre of Australia. The city is located in an area of great scenic beauty with rugged ranges and spectacular gorges in a desert landscape. The town offers air-conditioned shopping centres, a wide range of restaurants, cafes and a cinema complex. There are numerous sporting, recreational and cultural activities to suit both families and single people. There is a range of educational facilities and housing costs are equivalent to metro Australia. The town has plenty to offer; its combination of lifestyle, strong economy and well-connected, friendly multicultural community make it a fantastic place to live. == Essential Criteria == To be successful in applying for this position you must hold FRACP or equivalent (or be close to obtaining your fellowship) and be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
